Are You a “Winer”?

If you like wine, head to Enothek. A wine-bar-cum-wine-shop in Klein Basel, Enothek has a stylish, modern atmosphere and offers wine by the glass as well as bottles for sale. While you’re sipping at your Sauvignon Blanc, peruse the interesting selection of bottles available to take home or to drink there (there is an additional service fee to drink bottled wine there).

If you’re hungry, you can nibble at a tasty antipasto, meat, or cheese plate or ask to see their dinner menu for an excellent meal, which they bring in from nearby Brauerei Restaurant.

Before you leave make sure you purchase a bottle or two of A1 Sauce or Jack Daniels BBQ Sauce as well as any number of other interesting “international” condiments that are on sale at the front of the bar.

Enothek is open from 2:30-Midnight, Monday-Saturday. It can also be booked for private parties. For more information visit the site:

A Sweet Treat

Gilgen web.jpg

The line that extends out the door should be your tip-off: head to Gilgen for some of the best pastries in Basel. The selection at this Bäckerei-Konditorei is as broad as it is tasty. Try a triangular-shaped jelly donut called a daeschli or enjoy their version of an Entenmann’s crumb cake - the individual size of this irresistable treat is called a streusseli. Don’t miss Gilgen’s chocolate croissant (”schoggi gipfeli”), which is as light as air. And when the strawberries are in, run - don’t walk - for a taste of their scrumptious strawberry tarts. In addition to their exceptional pastries, Gilgen also sells fresh bread and chocolates. Closed Sunday.
