THE STUBE

Before I go any further, I want to state for the record, that I am not a beer person. Sure I’ll enjoy the occasional pint of Guinness or a Corona with lime on a hot summer’s day, but that’s about it. Still, even I could not resist the hoppy, rustic charms of the Fischerstube!
One of two UeliBier microbrewery restaurants located just over the Mittlerebruecke in Klein Basel, entering the Fischerstube instantly makes you feel like a local (or at least how this expat thinks being a local might feel).
Whether it’s the enormous plates of meat (on one visit we were accosted by what I can only describe as a ham hock that flew over from another table) or the giant and very politely named beer “towers” (3 or 5 liter) that you can order if your crew likes to drink beer in bulk…everything at the “Stube” is larger than life . Everything, that is, except the space itself. Tables are often hard to come by, but the good news in warm weather is that they have a Biergarten, too.
The place is always packed, smokey*, and load of fun….so it’s easy to find yourself suddenly facing the post-Tram 2am walk home. At that hour make sure to partake of the (only somewhat scarey) basement bathroom before you leave or you’ll be on a hunt for the nearest pissoir the minute you’re out the door.
* It scores a breathtakingly (literally) low 2 on the Bâlehoo- Lung-O-Meter.
