WHERE TO SHOP - THANKSGIVING INGREDIENTS
For those of you making Thanksgiving dinner at home this year, here is a quick list of some resources for common ingredients.
Turkey – Manor. You can pre-order it at the meat counter.
Brown Sugar – Thanks to a reader who let me know that Fenwicks on Missionstrasse in Basel carries REAL brown sugar. Dark and light. About 4.50 CHF per bag. (You can also order it from www.tasteofamerica.ch)
Pumpkin Pie Pack – Globus, downstairs in the baking section close to the Bread counter. (It isn’t Libby’s but it works.) You can also get Libby’s brand pumpkin pack and Carnation evaporated milk at www.tasteofamerica.ch.
Other Thanksgiving-related items available at www.tasteofamerica.ch include Crisco (Yes it does make a flakier crust but it is loaded with trans-fats. This year try a crust made with butter instead), canned cranberry sauce, brown sugar, vanilla extract, Karo syrup and Stovetop Stuffing.
NOTE: If you want to order from www.tasteofamerica.ch you’d better do it quickly – better yet contact them to see about delivery in time for Thanksgiving - and there is a 50 CHF minimum, so maybe get a few friends together to order.
A CORPORATE SEASONAL PARTY WITH A DIFFERENCE
Stuck for a good idea for your department’s seasonal party this year? Looking for an original venue and a night to remember? Why not try an evening across the border in France? Cornucopia Events sources and organizes off-the-beaten track events in English inspired by the rich cultural resources of Alsace. Their selection for the festive season includes:
Soirée Automobile - the entire world-famous Mulhouse vintage car museum just for your party (dinner, a private tour, games and quizzes in and out of the cars, etc).
Festive Fabrics at the Mulhouse Musée d’Impression sur Etoffes including private shopping at its exquisite Christmas Market, a guided tour of the year-end exhibition (a restrospective of ladies’ stockings!) and a festive French dinner.
Go Gourmet with an exclusive cooking class at a one star Michelin restaurant joined at dinner by your spouses for the festive menu your team prepared!
Vino, Vidi Vici - Festive wine-tasting in the cellars of a renowned Alsatian wine grower followed by a gastronomic restaurant meal show-casing a selection of the wines you tasted.
Hop La La! - Flammekuche until you burst in a 17th century timbered hostel – cheap, cheerful, warm and friendly in a typical Alsatian village deep in the countryside.

BASEL ON ICE (THAT’S NICE)
Fancy yourself the next Michelle Kwan? Or perhaps you’re channeling Wayne Gretzky. In any case, nothing says holidays like taking a spin (or in my case a wobble) around the local ice skating rink. There are several options in the Basel area. A friend recommended the Margarethen.
They have three outdoor rinks, one reserved for figure skating practice, one open for the public, and one for hockey. It is open every day, with public open skating all the time. When there is no hockey practice (try Sunday afternoon) you can bring a stick and puck to pass around with a friend. You can rent hockey skates or regular skates of pretty decent quality (hockey skates were CCM). Adults admittance: 7 CHF.
Visit this website for more information on this and and other skating rinks www.sportamtbasel.ch, use left-hand navigation)
