Bergli Books presents Brigid Keenan, author of Diplomatic Baggage - The Adventures of a Trailing Spouse. Brigid was a successful London fashion journalist before she fell in love with a diplomat, which caused her to leave behind the gilt chairs of the Paris salons for a large chicken shed in the forests of Nepal. His career took her and eventually their two daughters around the world from Brussels to Nepal to Trinidad, Barbados, India, Syria and Kazakhstan. TRY YOUR HAND AT CALLIGRAPHY – OCTOBER 18 & 19
If you’ve always wanted to try your hand at calligraphy, now’s your chance. Hanna Biedermann is offering classes for beginners and advance students in both English and German.

Beginner Classes offer an introduction to calligraphy and to the Anglaise & Antiqua alphabets with pen and ink.

Advanced Classes focus on mastering additional alphabets such as Humanistic Cursive, Versals, and on discovering a broader array of tools, materials and techniques. It also includes an introduction to experimental calligraphy using gouache & acrylics.

For upcoming classes you can choose one of two locations:
- Münchenstein, Wednesday, October 18, 7:30 - 9:30pm. Class held in German on Wednesdays (every other week).
- Basel, Thursday, Oct.19, 7 – 9pm. Class held in English on Thursdays (every other week).

Costs: CHF 340.- for 9×2h lessons & material CHF 30.-

Weekend Workshops
Hanna also offers a weekend workshop (Friday, 5pm-Sunday, 5pm) for adults as well as a children’s workshop for kids 10+. Dates are by appointment. If you are interested please contact Hanna for more information.

RESTAURANT ZUR HARMONIE
If you think “wurst”salat (essentially a salad garnished with bologna-channeling sausage rings) is the “best” salat, then you’ll want to plan a visit to Restaurant Zur Harmonie.

A casual neighborhood eatery, Zur Harmonie’s extensive and reasonably priced menu features an excellent wurstsalat mit pommes (french fries) as well as other tasty traditional Swiss fare like rösti and one of my personal favorites - kaeseschnitte (essential fondue on a plate). They also serve good pasta and seafood dishes at prices that won’t break the bank.

But whether or not you’re into wurst, Zur Harmonie is worth the trip for one reason alone: the french fries. A cold beer and a plate of Zur Harmonie fries is indeed one of best treats in town.
