THE PUCK DROPS HERE – SEPTEMBER 16

Tonight, September 16, is good news for hockey fans (and disgruntled soccer fans). That’s because the puck will drop at St.Jakob-Arena as EHC Basel faces off against HC Fribourg-Gottéron in its first game of the season. Check at your local Ticketcorner (SBB, Manor, some Post Offices) for tickets or see their website for more information: www.ehcbasel.ch

Also, make sure to download their entire season schedule as a pdf
here.

“GETTING AFRICA TO FEED ITSELF” – SEPTEMBER 21

Over the past 40 years, per capita food production has fallen in Africa. Food production in the hunger-stricken continent could slip further as a result of damaging policies long on political correctness and short on investment. During his insightful Syngenta-sponsored lecture, James Shikwati, founder director of Inter Region Economic Network, will challenge some of the widely held beliefs on solutions to African poverty.

James has worked extensively with Kenyan and other regional opinion leaders to promote ideas that improve productivity and increase freedom to trade as a way to alleviate poverty. James is also Editor of the African Executive, a weekly on-line newsletter: www.africanexecutive.com.

RETURN TO THE FORBIDDEN PLANET – TICKETS ON SALE

Don’t miss “Return to the Forbidden Planet” by Bob Carton. This Laurence Olivier award-winning musical cleverly fuses Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’ with 60′s Rock & Roll Hits and 50′s science fiction B-movies.

The Daily Telegraph says this show is….”wittily inventive and endearingly self-deprecating…..rockin’ entertainment.” We say: guaranteed to have you rolling in your seats and dancing in the aisles to songs such as Young Girl, Born to be Wild, Monster Mash, and Good Vibrations.

Tickets now on sale either as an e-ticket through www.upstart-entertainment.ch, www.ticketsgate.ch or at your favorite English Bookshop, Bider & Tanner, Aeschenvorstadt 2 in Basel.

There are only 10 shows, starting October 27, so book early to avoid disappointment! Party and bar every show night, drinks and snacks at duty free prices! Show up in costume (sci-fi, or 60′s) and get a free drink.

To make your night even more enjoyable, Upstart Entertainment has a great deal on offer: Eat a fabulous Indian buffet dinner, 2 for 1 (Fr. 29.50 only instead of Fr. 59.-) at Ganesh Tandoori restaurant, right around the corner from the theatre. Only valid with a ticket to the musical (before or after the show).

Call 078 627 7357 for more information.

DON’T STAY IN THE DARK – EAT IN IT!
If you’ve never been to Blindekuh Restaurant in Basel, then you’re really missing an experience. This restaurant, in which the waitstaff are blind or visually impaired, invites you to experience the world as they do – in the dark. That’s right, you go through the entire dining experience in a pitch-black room. You’ll never appreciate your sight more than when you try to eat a simple forkful of salad and miss your mouth – three times!

A word of warning: blindekuh is not for the faint of heart (several in our group experienced a mild degree of claustrophobia) nor is it particularly for the food (which is good but not great). Still it is absolutely a worthwhile experience that benefits not only the Blind-Liecht foundation (an organization working to create employment opportunities for blind and visually impaired people) but also you! Great for corporate teambuilding events.

For an interesting article about the experience, check out the
English Show website.
