FORMATTING PROBLEMS?

I’ve received notes from people saying that they’ve had problems with the newsletter formatting. I am trying to figure out the cause of this problem and I am working to keep the formatting to a minimum so everyone can read the information easily. However, if you are experiencing these problems, please a) let me know and b) refer to the online version of this week’s newsletter on my website, here.

Archived versions of previous newsletters are also available on the site for your information. Many thanks to everyone for your continued feedback and support!

CORRECTION: “BOOKWORMS STORY TIME”

Last week, I incorrectly attributed the Bookworms Storytime program to Centrepoint and also indicated that it was held every other week. In fact, “Bookworms Storytime’ is sponsored by the American Women’s Club (AWC) of Basel and is so popular that it is now held every Wednesday at 16:00 at the AWC Library at Centrepoint. My apologies to the AWC for these errors.

This event is open to children of all ages in the Basel area, so mark your calendar for this coming Wednesday and help your kids discover the love of reading. NOTE: While the event is open to everyone, at this time, books may be checked out of the library only by members of Centrepoint or the AWC.

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL? - SEPTEMBER 9

That’s right, they’re back! This Saturday FC Zuerich will be in Basel to square off against hometown favorites FC Basel. And it is sure to be an interesting game as this will be the first meeting between the two teams since their post-match riot a few months ago. (Yikes.)

THE LAST SUPPER – SEPTEMBER 9 -11
If you’re in Geneva in the next few days, don’t miss The Last Supper. Held from September 9-11, this interactive performance piece by the Reckless Sleepers is not for those with a weak stomach.

An audience of 39 sits down to dinner with three performers. Each person is given a number and shown into a chandelier lit room lined with tables. You sit, sipping wine as every so often a chef appears, platter in hand, calls a number and an audience member receives dinner. The meals - birthday cake; liver and onion with cottage cheese; forgiveness - are the last meal requests of 13 prisoners on death row in Texas.

Accompanying your dinner “party,” are last words from Kafka, Noel Coward, the Wicked Witch and others.

ASKED AND ANSWERED - DENTIST
I love going to the dentist (really!) so when someone asked me if I could recommend a good dentist in town, I was happy to help. I gave him the name of one in Baselstadt, below. I have not gone to him yet, preferring to get my dentifrice fix on visits to the US, but he was recommended highly by a friend (with great teeth!).

While we’re talking teeth, can anyone recommend an English-speaking dentist in Riehen or other Basel-land locations?

STRAUSSIs ARE BACK - FOR A LIMITED TIME
It seems like just yesterday that I was waxing rhapsodic about the fresh asparagus at the straussis. (In fact, it was May.) But the great news is that straussies are back for their autumn appearance – and they are once again featuring some excellent local produce.

Located in Germany, straussis are actually working farms that open their doors as a restaurant for several weeks each year, usually in spring and fall. The food is regional, seasonal, delicious and cheap.

We like this one: www.fuenfschilling.de

So, head over the border in the next few weeks for some flammenkuche, a bowl of pumpkin soup, or a roasted chicken salad bigger than your head - all for less than the cost of chips and dip at La Fonda (or pretty close at least).

If you have news or information to share please send it to Karena Meehan.
